Scott Lawrenson, a 1986 Liberty graduate, returned to his alma mater in July 2018 when he was named the Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine.

Prior to his return, Lawrenson served as the Head Athletic Trainer at nearby Randolph College in Lynchburg, Va., from 2012-18. While at Randolph, Scott was nominated by his peers and awarded the Virginia Athletic Trainers Association College and University Athletic Trainer of the Year award in 2016.

Scott previously worked at Liberty from 2006-12. He returned to his alma mater in January 2006, covering softball and working as the department’s athletic insurance coordinator. After spending the spring of 2006 with Lady Flames’ softball program, Lawrenson took over the sports medicine duties for the Flames’ baseball program. He served as the Athletic Insurance coordinator for four years, before taking over the rehabilitation coordinator duties during the summer of 2009. He also worked with the Flames men’s soccer team in 2011.

One of three Liberty graduates to work as an athletic trainer in Major League Baseball, Lawrenson spent 20 years as an athletic trainer in professional baseball.  After graduating from Liberty, he began his career in 1986, spending 11 years in the New York Mets minor league system. Lawrenson was a Mets minor league athletic trainer with several of the organization’s teams from 1986 through 1990, before becoming the Mets Minor League Training and Conditioning Coordinator in 1991.

He served in the capacity until October 1996, when he was promoted to the Major Leagues. Lawrenson was an Assistant Athletic Trainer with the New York Mets through 2001. In 1999, the Mets advanced to National League Championship Series as a wild card. The following season, the Mets won the NL Pennant and played the New York Yankees in the 2000 World Series.

Lawrenson was named Interim Head Athletic Trainer for the team in September 2001. A month later, he became the Mets' Head Athletic Trainer, a position he held for four years. In 2005, Lawrenson became an Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Washington Nationals' inaugural season.

Lawrenson has traveled with professional baseball squads as an athletic trainer to Canada, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico and Puerto Rico. He is an alumnus member of the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society and also a retired member of the Major League Baseball Players Association. He is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and is a Virginia-licensed Athletic Trainer.

Scott and his wife, Julie, a two-time Liberty graduate, have two daughters and three grandsons.  Bree is a public defender for the state of Florida, and Carly Rae is a hair stylist in Nashville and is married to former Flames football player Jay Coady.
